বিনে পয়সায় যে রোগিদের দেখতেন, সেই রোগীরাই পিটিয়ে মারলেন ৭৫ বছরের ডা. দেবেনকে

ডাক্তার নিগ্রহ এর কথা রোজ কোথাও না কোথাও শোনা যাচ্ছেই। কিছুদিন আগে এই ডাক্তার নিগ্রহ নিয়ে গোটা পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরব হয়েছিল। ডাক্তার দের বন্ধ এ অনেক রোগি নানা সমস্যায় পড়েছিলেন।

আজ যে ডাক্তার এর কথা আমরা বলব তার নাম ছিল দেবেন দত্ত। তার বয়স ছিল ৭৫ বছর। তিনি গত ১৫ বছর আগেই ডাক্তারি পেশা থেকে অবসর গ্রহন করেন।

তারর তিনি বিভিন্ন জায়গায় চেম্বার করে বিনামুল্যে রোগী দেখতেন। আসামের চা বাগানে গরিব দুঃস্থ দের পরিষেবা দিতেন। 31/8/19 তাকেই তার রোগীরা পিটিয়ে মেরে ফেলল।

শোনা গেছে এক রোগির দুর্ভাগ্যজনক মৃত্যুর জন্যে দায়ী করা হয় ডাক্তারবাবু কে। তারপর তার ওপর চড়াও হন এলাকার মানুষরা। গত ১৭ বছর ধরে যিনি সেই মানুষদের বিনে পয়সায় চিকিৎসা করে এসেছেন সেই মানুষরাই তাকে পিটিয়ে মেরে ফেললেন।

এই ঘটনার দুঃখ প্রকাশ করে আরেকজন ডাক্তার বাবু বলেছেন–” যেদিন আমাকে ও এই দেশ আর দেশ বাসী পিটিয়ে মেরে ফেলবে,তখন হয়তো আর শেষ অনুরোধ টুকু ও রাখতে পারবো না।তাই এখনই বলে যাচ্ছি।মেরে ফেলার পর আমার স্টেথো খানি ও চুল্লি তে আমার মরদেহের সাথে ঢুকিয়ে দিও।এ মারণাস্ত্র যেন আর কেউ না পায়। “

WBDF strongly condemns the violent murder of a senior physician Dr. Deben Dutta on Saturday 31st Aug 2019. This gruesome incident took place in Teok Tea Estate Hospital in Jorhat Assam.

Dr. Dutta was a 75-year-old physician who had involved himself for the service to his community even after retirement! The people he served thanked him by murdering him in front of police presence.

Violence in healthcare has become a way of life for the medical practitioners here in India. However this incident is possibly the most gruesome of all episodes. This is possibly our Nirbhaya moment.

The community he served did not hesitate for once in beating him to extinction. Decades of service, out-of-hour help, solicited advices to the patients he served was washed away, forgotten and violently trashed by a moment of service inadequacy. A life spent on giving and helping snatched away mercilessly by the very people he called his own.

The crowning glory in this barbarism is possibly the refusal of the mob to allow life-saving medical aid to the grievously injured. And in front of the Police force who have mastered the art of acting as Innocent Bystanders in times of crisis.

It took paramilitary forces to evacuate an injured man. Such is the strength of the mob in India. Such is the nature of gratitude and natural justice in India. Such is the state of security for the medical practitioners in India. In glorious India the mobs remain our future patients. Incited by politics, divided by hatred, united by their love of violence and in complete defiance to the rule of law our Constitution envisaged.

As we mourn the loss of another son of India, we pray hesitantly and without any expectations the strictest punishment for the perpetrators of this crime. Because this violence has not only killed a doctor but it has inflicted yet another body blow to the worlds best profession. It’s a different matter that we are not appreciated in India any longer.
