দিলীপ কুমার এক জায়গায় বলছেন....

আমি তখন কেরিয়ারের তুঙ্গে । একদিন আমি প্লেনে করে যাচ্ছিলাম । খুব সাধারণ শার্ট আর প্যান্ট পরিহিত একজন ভদ্রলোক আমার পাশে বসেই যাচ্ছিলেন , দেখে উনাকে একজন শিক্ষিত এবং মার্জিত মধ্যবিত্ত মানুষ মনে হয়েছিলো ।

অন্য সহযাত্রীরা আমায় চিনতে পেরে খুব উৎসাহিত কিন্তু ভদ্রলোককে লক্ষ্য করলাম উনার কোন ভ্রুক্ষেপ নেই । উনি একমনে একটা খবরের কাগজ পড়ছিলেন আর মাঝে মাঝে জানলার বাইরে তাকিয়ে কি ভাবছিলেন ।
চা পরিবেশন করা হলো , উনি মার্জিত ভাবে নিঃশব্দে চা খেলেন লক্ষ্য করলাম ।

আমার উনার প্রতি কৌতুহল বেড়েই চলছিলো ।
তাই উনার সাথে কথা বলার জন্য উনার দিকে তাকিয়ে হাসলাম ।
উনিও একটা সৌজন্যমূলক হাসি ফিরিয়ে দিয়ে বললেন ......'হ্যালো' .......

কিছু সৌজন্যমূলক কথোপকথন শুরু হলো । আমিই নিজে থেকে সিনেমা প্রসঙ্গ উত্থাপন করলাম ।
জিগ্গাসা করলাম ' আপনি সিনেমা দেখেন ?'

উনি বললেন 'কখনো-সখনো । শেষ যে সিনেমাটা দেখেছি ........ হ্যাঁ...তাও প্রায় এক বছরের বেশী হয়ে গেছে ।'

বললাম ' আমি ঐ ফিল্ম ইন্ডাস্ট্রিতেই আছি ।'

উনি উৎসাহিত হয়ে বললেন ' দারুণ ব্যপার । তা আপনি কি করেন ?'

বললাম ' আমি একজন অভিনেতা ।'

প্রত্যুত্তরে বললেন 'দারুণ '॥

ব্যাস । ওই পর্যন্ত .........
প্লেন ল্যান্ড করার পর আমি ভদ্রলোকের দিকে কমর্দনের জন্য হাতটা বাড়িয়ে দিয়ে বললাম
' আমার নাম দিলীপ কুমার ।'
উনি আমার হাতটা ঝাঁকিয়ে দিয়ে বললেন 'আপনার সাথে পরিচয় হয়ে দারুণ লাগলো । আমার নাম জে . আর . ডি . টাটা .....'

ঐ দিন থেকে একটা জিনিষ জানলাম " যত বড় হই না কেন , আমার থেকেও বড় কেউ আছে ।"

When Dilip Kumar learnt a very important life lesson while on a flight

The Thespian actor has turned 94 today. Born on 11 December 1922 as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, the superstar has regaled the Indian audience with his flawless performance in over 60 films. Dilip Kumar’s film career spanned over six decades and though he is fondly called the Tragedy King, he has starred in genres like romantic, dramatic, comedy and period dramas as well.

The actor has won 9 Filmfare Awards and in fact is the only actor with the most number of Filmfare Best Actor trophies (8). While he was a hit with the fans, the critics were equally in awe. He is touted as one of the greatest actors Hindi cinema has ever seen.
He also has the Padma Bhushan (1991), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1994) and Padma Vibhushan (2015) awarded to him by the Government of India. Not only India, the actor was worshipped in Pakistan as well. He was accorded the highest civilian honour, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (1997) by their Government.

Despite all these honours and the idol worshipping that the megastar enjoyed throughout his life, he has been one of the most humble human beings. Veteran journalists in their nostalgia columns have often described him as someone ‘who walked with the kings without losing the common touch.’ Dilip Kumar was a star who never let stardom get into his head. On his birthday today, we dug out a beautiful instance from a day in Dilip Kumar’s life where he learnt an important life lesson.

In an earlier interview with senior journalist Mark Manuel, the actor talks about the day when he was on board a flight and met someone who changed the actor’s view on stardom.

“At the peak of my career, I was once travelling by plane. The passenger next to me was elderly. Dressed in a simple shirt and pant, he appeared middle class but well educated. Other passengers kept glancing at me. But this gentleman appeared unconcerned. He read his newspaper, looked out of the window, and when tea came, he sipped it quietly. Trying to strike a conversation, I smiled. The man courteously smiled back and said hello,” said the actor.

He further explained how they then started talking and being a cinema stalwart, he brought the subject to cinema. He then asked the gentleman if he watched films to which he replied that he hasn’t seen any film since a long time. Proud about his line of work, Dilip Kumar highlighted the fact that he worked in films but he didn’t get a reaction he was expecting. The man did ask about what he actually does but Dilip saabs revelation that he is an actor was met with just a nod and a simple, “Oh, wonderful.”

One would think who this Indian man is who doesn’t watches films or is not aware about Indian stars. In a country like India where cricket and cinema have been the biggest religions since time immemorial, it is hard to come by someone who can’t tell a superstar when he sees one.

Dilip saab further shared, “When we landed, I held out my hand and said, ‘It was good to travel with you. By the way, my name is Dilip Kumar.’ The man shook my hand and smiled, ‘Thank you. I am J. R. D. Tata’.” Dilip saab was stunned and that meeting had a huge impact on him. He said, “I learned, no matter how big you are, there is always someone bigger. Be humble. It costs nothing.” Surely there’s a lesson for all of us, stars or no, to take from this beautiful meeting of two greats. Here’s wishing Dilip saab a wonderful birthday and great health.
