The liberation war broke out in my first year at med school. I joined the liberation force. My blood boiled with rebellion. My father was an martyred intellectual. He was killed in April. We observe the martyred intellectual day only in December. But those who were murdered during the nine month timeline also deserve the honor. My father's name is mentioned nowhere despite being one of the top professors of medicine at that time.

We got independence. But the job to build our country anew was at hand. The doctor community was going through a change. When I was an intern, the country was facing a great crisis. A rift had been made between the government and the professionals on the issue of professional rights. The doctors who were in the frontline of the movement were all imprisoned. By twist of fate I somehow found myself leading the movement thereafter. With engineers and agriculturists, we formed "Prokichi". The government doctors were poorly paid back then. The general idea was that they would manage by doing private practice. We fought for these rights. The movement went on despite the constant risk of being imprisoned or harassed. The end result is the BMA building that stands today. After some time, the government too acknowledged our rights.

Years after these events, I moved to USA for my career. But that doesn't mean that I've cut ties with my county. How can I not remember my motherland for which I've fought in a war. A common misconception we face that it is difficult to do something for the country from abroad. I intended to change that belief. At first I used to visit PG hospital. I'd say that I've come to learn from you all. My mission was to exchange our medical knowledge. I wanted to make our young doctors acquainted with the advancements of medical science.

With the help of the government, we organized quite a few seminars. We emphasized on different branches of medical science like critical care and emergency medicine and raised awareness. We trained doctors too. We held a workshop on infection control for both doctors and nurses. It wouldn't have been possible without the help of the government and some of the top doctors of our country.

I've also established Shaheed Shamsuddin Foundation, named after my late father. Under its supervision, we've established a kidney hospital in Sylhet. Our donor left us the land for free and we didn't have to purchase it. We who are settled abroad think a lot about our country. We always try our best for the betterment of our nation.

As I'm currently posted at a renowned medical school, I get the opportunity to speak at various seminars. There I talk about my country, about the liberation war. Whenever I talk about the war, I can't help getting sentimental. Talking about it makes me wonder how much history we have skipped and how much of it has gone unwritten. At that time, each of us had a part to play. Everyone of us had to sacrifice something. But do we speak of it? We also worked with the mothers of the martyred war heroes. We've found out that a large number of these women have lost their sanity due to the loss they've suffered. But we never mention their sacrifices. They too are a glorious part of our independence.

We've achieved this country on the sacrifice of many. But for reasons unknown we always put our own interests in front rather than our country's. If we work from our own positions, no matter how little contribution we make, it will be enough to take our nation forward. The history of our liberation war isn't about pride only. It teaches us to put your motherland first, to break out from your own world and stand shoulder to shoulder with the mass. A prosperous Bangladesh is not only a dream, it's the practice of offering oneself to the service of the nation.
